Car Parkeology
If you’re a bit of a history buff, you might find this interesting! Pictured here is The Crown, the pub that once stood on the site of our car park.
At the end of the road there was a pedestrian crossing over the railway line leading to and from the factories and docks. The Crown had a reputation for being very ‘lively’ on a Friday night after workers were paid and they went straight to the pub from work earning it the nickname ‘The Ruin’ as it ruined lots of marriages!
It also was well used by foreign sailors who moored literally a few hundred yards away on the river. When the car park was being built, the builders hit the cellar on the first day which was empty and had to be filled in.
So when you take a spot in our car park, spare a thought for the history that lies beneath!
