Škoda drives off with five What Car? Awards

  • Superb named Best Estate for a record-breaking eighth year in a row
  • Scala, Superb, and Octavia all named back-to-back winners in their sectors
  • Updated Karoq named Best Family SUV for Value
  • Škoda has won 18 What Car? titles in just three years
  • Judging panel praised Škoda for its exceptional value for money and quality

Škoda has added to its remarkable collection of What Car? titles by securing no fewer than five more accolades for 2023. The Czech brand enjoyed another busy night at the annual awards ceremony - widely regarded as the ‘Oscars’ of the automotive industry – with the Superb named as an overall category winner and the Scala, Octavia and Karoq all recognised as Best Buys in their respective categories.

Leading Škoda’s 2023 silverware haul was the Superb Estate, which extended its remarkable winning streak by taking home the What Car? Best Estate award for a record-breaking eighth year in the row. The Czech estate has now been named as the best in class since 2015, with its combination of value, practicality and comfort proving to be an unbeatable combination.

Commenting on the Superb’s record-breaking win, Steve Huntingford, What Car? Editor said: "If you want to know how good the Skoda Superb Estate is, consider this: it's now won its class at the What Car? Awards for eight years in a row, an achievement no car has managed before. As you'd expect, it offers loads of space, both for passengers and luggage. But it's also a very comfortable and relaxing car, comes with a great range of engines and is really big on value.”

The Škoda Scala also recorded a back-to-back victory, being named Best Family Car for Value for the second year in a row. Summarising the verdict of the What Car judging panel, Steve Huntingford said: "The Scala stands out for its highly competitive pricing, yet it ticks boxes that plenty of much more expensive family cars fail to. For example, it combines a supple ride with composed handling, while inside you get loads of rear space, a big boot and a good infotainment system."

The Octavia was another repeat winner, retaining its title of Best Family Car for Practicality. As in previous years, the Octavia wowed the judging panel with its broad range of talents. "As a hatchback that dwarfs most cars for interior and boot space, the Skoda Octavia remains the family car to beat for practicality.” explained Steve Huntingford. “It offers six-footers loads of room for lounging in comfort, plus we managed to fit 10 carry-on suitcases in the boot – four more than most rivals cars can take."

In addition to dominating the estate car category, the Superb was also named Best Executive Car for Value. Once again, the Czech-built hatch and estate impressed the panel with its unbeatable practicality and comfort. Announcing the Superb’s win, Steve Huntingford said: "While company car drivers are most often the kingmakers in the executive car class, these vehicles aren’t only for the benefit of business users; they can offer private buyers terrific value, too, and none more so than the comfortable and hugely spacious Superb.”

Completing Škoda’s impressive trophy haul was the recently updated Karoq, which was named Best Family SUV for Value by the What Car? judging panel. "With car prices rising seemingly day by day, finding great value is harder than ever.” explained Steve Huntingford, adding: “But you absolutely get that with the Skoda Karoq, because this temptingly priced family SUV offers a spacious interior with clever rear seating and is a pleasure to drive, thanks to its comfortable ride and great visibility."

In total, Škoda has won 18 What Car? titles in just three years, making it one of the most decorated brands in the industry. In total, Škoda cars won 43 industry awards across all sectors of the automotive media in 2022.
